Over the course of almost forty years, various donor initiatives have emerged and disappeared, driven by good intentions but ultimately yielding only satisfactory results. Numerous respected donor-implementing partners often make bold claims about working towards obsolescence. However, these companies or organizations should have delivered the desired outcomes for donors.<\/p>\n
Can you actually work your way out of a job? The answer is a resounding yes if you embrace this concept.<\/p>\n
Transitioning out of a job doesn’t imply a lack of work. Instead, it involves keeping your objectives and achievements at the forefront, while equipping yourself with the knowledge and strategies needed to seamlessly pass the baton to the next individual or organization when the time comes to explore new opportunities with different clients.<\/p>\n
USAID<\/a> has introduced an exciting new initiative known as The New Partnership Initiative (NPI<\/a>). Launched in 2019, this initiative is committed to implementing USAID’s Acquisition and Assistance Strategy<\/a> principles by forging diverse partnerships and revolutionizing the way the agency collaborates. NPI aims to break down barriers for nontraditional partners, including local actors, small US businesses, faith-based organizations, cooperatives, diaspora groups, minority-serving institutions, and civil society organizations. By doing so, USAID can fully embrace the incredible potential of this diverse partnering community in our joint pursuit of development goals.<\/p>\n
Ms. Samantha Power, USAID Administrator, has shown fortitude with NPI, and we applaud her. The established USAID partners need to practice working outside of their jobs.<\/p>\n
The Paris Declaration aspires to make aid better. According to the OECD, “the Paris Declaration lays down a practical, action-orientated roadmap to improve the quality of aid and its impact on development.”<\/p>\n
As noted in “Turning the Tables, Aid and Accountability under the Paris Framework,” the 2008 publication, “The Paris Declaration is welcome, and is an important step towards establishing a progressive international consensus on aid. However, the Declaration is insufficient to make aid work long-term \u2013 donors and recipients must go further.”<\/p>\n
There is a critical need for collaboration in creating aid that establishes “progressive international consensus,” as called for in the Paris Framework. Equally important is a commitment to creating systems that ensure fiscal management while empowering aid recipients to manage programs effectively within their communities and in perpetuity.<\/p>\n
Recipient governments need to be trained in improving their public accountability while clamping down on corruption, mainly as more funding is channeled through their systems \u2013 ultimately meant to reach the recipients on the ground.<\/p>\n

Good Governance<\/h2>\n
FRESH, LLC felt that local NGOs needed to incorporate the element of good governance to strengthen their organization. For example, recently, a NGO Board of Directors fired the Executive Director from its organization. However, because the Board and Executive Director had several fundamental differences, the real reason for the dismissal was unclear. The local newspaper, to demonstrate this lack of clarity, portrayed the Board as a group who has parties at meetings and dictates to the Executive Director.<\/p>\n
To help alleviate situations like these from happening, FRESH, LLC has taken a survey with various local NGOs in Kenya about the relationship between the Executive Director and the Board of Directors. Our findings will be established on our site by October 1, 2006. We will use our findings to design a workshop that will addresses the fundamental misunderstandings and the roles and responsibilities of both groups.<\/p>\n
In September 2023, FRESH launched the Roles and Responsibilities of the Board of Directors (BoDs) with Let’s Go Mental Kenya. We intend to roll out this training with other BoDs courses. Non-governmental organizations or nonprofits need a vibrant board.<\/p>\n
